I'm in love with these guys right now. They are just so fun. The video, the lyrics....It just makes me happy. The intro makes me think of that Fleetwood Mac song...Just like he one winged dove...sings a song sounds like she's singing.....

It just shows how desperate we all are for love. We are willing to go to extreme measures to get it, but it is not something that can be forced. I think it takes something deep and troubling to many of us and tries to make it lighthearted. Sounds exactly like the personality of someone I know. Deal through humor is my motto.

Mama Snaps is here visiting her one and only most wonderful daughter in the universe, and we got to perusing old posts on the blog last night. I played for her our taking out the trash Carpenter style because that clip just brings me such pleasure. When she, in all her musical knowledge, tells me that it is actually a cover of an old Klaatu song. I have never heard of the band Klaatu so I immediately go to youtube and find this.





This song was released in 1977, well before the birth of this cookie, and here's the best part; on an album called Anus of Uranus. How could I not have known an album under that title existed. I am so disappointed in myself.

Back in 1991 a storm of sexiness and testosterone was unleashed on the world. That storm took form in a pair of bald headed brothers named Richard and Fred Fairbrass. The two were working as fitness instructors and trying to break into the music business. Frustrated with their lack of progress and interest from any major record label, they took out a small loan and financed the recording of a single and the accompanying video..   And the world was never the same.

Ha! You danced, didn't you! Don't try to deny it, you cant resist it. Sure, it's just about as shallow and commercial as pop gets but... DAMN it's a good beat! And that's not even their best song. The gentlemen went on to pen even more magical lyrics.

 This song was actually integral in roping Mrs Chops McGee. I own this album. I bought it. I paid money for it. Real money. Your jealous, I know. And back when Miss Chops and I were dating I busted this bad boy out when we were driving one day. She was overcome with an uncontrollable urge to make out with me. That actually happens to me a lot but this particular time Right Said Fred was the catalyst. My oral prowess was not as refined as it is now and were it not for the magic Richard and Fred brought to my '91 Cavalier I don't know where I'd be now. Ahh.. who am I kidding, I've always been a fantastic kisser, the music was just icing on the cake. Nonetheless, we all owe the brothers a debt of gratitude.

Revel in all that is their glory and thank our lucky stars we have them! Lets set sail for seas of passion now!

Manly Music... Late Monday.. kinda Tuesdayish

You thought I wasn't coming back, didn't you? I'll admit my ego was bruised and battered after last Mondays fiasco where poor Katie Todd was maligned and maltreated (and my masculinity was called into question). But I will not be defeated! Today I bring you Cold War Kids.

Nathan Willett (lead vocals, piano, guitar), Jonnie Russell (guitar, vocals, percussion), Matt Maust(bass guitar), and Matt Aveiro (drums) are from Fullerton CA and have been banging it out since 2004. They have a great classic LA garage band sound. Simple rhythms, strong guitar and no nonsense keyboard. Nathan manages to always sounds like he's right on the edge of screaming and somehow still belts out a great melody. The whole band has great energy and just seems so.... well, energetic.

Their newest release seems a little too slick and well produced and misses the raw funk of their first album. Hopefully they will get over their sophomore jinx and get back to throwin' down old school rock. This last one is my personal favorite and the song that gets queued up whenever I get by myself in the car. I open the sunroof, roll all the windows down and scream along. I'll treat you to the live version 'cause its the only place I can find this particular song and 'cause I think they just wail live. Cleo can attest that I am frequently disappointed by some band's live performances. Too many of them don't measure up to what you hear on the album after they have been run through the sound board. I think Cold War Kids are one of the exceptions that really shine when you strip them down.

Chops' Redemption

On Monday, our dearly beloved, Chops McGee posted a song from the Katie Todd Band. Needless to say, the reviews weren't great. We all agreed that Katie has a lovely and soulful voice, but the band just wasn't cutting it for us. So, in our effort to bring you unbiased commentary, I took it upon myself to research this subject a little further. And I found this.



I actually really liked this song, music and all. So, Chopsie, from the bottom of my heart I apologize for dissing your girl.

Thursday's Throwback- The Lightning Seeds

This is so underrated as far as I'm concerned. It has a relaxed feel without being depressing, and great lyrics. The first song I'm gonna play you is most likely not one you've heard unless you have this album. The album is called Cloudcukooland. It was released in 1989, I believe. The song is Joy. It's kind of a sad one, but has a thread of hope creatively woven through it. It's the ultimate lovers' repentance.
It has great sentimental value for me and I needed to hear it. It helped me get someone back when I made a huge mistake. I almost ruined my life. In fact, had this song not helped me say what I needed to say, life as I know it now would not exist. Pretty cool stuff.

Another Artist Worthy of Feature Status: Matt and Kim

We have an informer here on SFTSS. And Cleo, if you even think lickey boom boom down, I will kick you in the throat; repeatedly. He will remain incognito , like the driver on Top Gear, to keep up the mystique. But, every now and then, he gives us tips on artists that are worthy of our super hip blog.

Now, these guys have been around for a while but I don't think they have gotten much recognition. They have a very indie, almost unproduced sound, which I find very cool. Matt also sounds British, but alas, he's from Brooklyn. Close enough I guess. So here's a little taste of Matt and Kim:



This next video got some play in the UK, but was said to be to violent for the US. I say "NONSENSE!!!" who likes violence more than Americans. So enjoy this one too.....or don't... whatever, It's up to you, I could care less what you do with your time.




We hope this helps you Matt and Kim. You need to get some cash flow so you can record your videos somewhere other than your kitchen.

Artist of the Week : VAMPIRE WEEKEND

Vampire Weekend

This Afro/preppy/new-wave combination has a history-- Brits like Orange Juice, Americans like Talking Heads. For now, though, it's one of the most deservedly buzzed-about things around: People have been chattering over Vampire Weekend ever since a CD-R demo of three of these songs started circulating last year. The excitement isn't hard to fathom. People spend a lot of time poking around for the edgy new underground thing, convinced that plain old pop songs have been done to death. But Vampire Weekend come along like Belle & Sebastian and the Strokes each did, sounding refreshingly laid back and uncomplicated, and with simple set-ups that make good songs sound exceedingly easy. (The result being not "this is mind-blowing," or "this is catchy," but "I have listened to this, straight through, four times a day for the past month".)

No surprise, then, that their first hit mp3 would be a song called "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa", which is sly, quiet, and casual in a way that blows away so many other bands who actively try to get your attention. Their label seems to have understood this effect, and so they've left these demos sounding as natural as they were: This release just fiddles with the mastering, switches out a few takes in ways you wouldn't much notice, plays with the sequencing, relegates one song to a B-side, and adds a couple of great ones that you can nonetheless understand being omitted the first time.

Most of the credit will wind up going to Koenig, who's the star presence here. By the second song, "Oxford Comma", the band is ticking along on little touches of keyboard and the tap of a snare drum, and he's still keeping the empty space captivating: There's a little indie yelp to his voice, but mostly he's relaxed, conversational, and wry. It all comes off as simple, jaunty, and homespun, but there's a lot of precision lurking beneath-- exactly what happens when you combine a music major and indie-pop. Takin' Out the Trash, Carpenter Style

My parents were large fans of the Carpenters. My mom can still be heard complaining that my dad took another woman to see the Carpenters live shortly after they started dating. I have suffered through them all -- Top of the World, Only Just Begun, Yesterday Once More. . . Repeatedly. Over and over. And over. Again. And again.

I looked forward to only one song. Only one Carpenter's ear worm truly stands the test of time -- Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft. I couldn't find the full version complete with the comparatively funny Top 40 DJ sketch (Waka, Waka, Waka), but here you go.



Yeah, that just happened. And I might add that it takes a special kind of evil genius to combine the pure cheese of the Carpenters with camp of Star Trek. I can only imagine how much searching it took to find all of these clips and edit them together. The end product is amazingly seamless, however, I can't but hurt for someone whose labor of love in life involved merging the worlds of Karen Carpenter and William Shatner.

Tuesday is Trash Day!!

I am having a bit of inner turmoil over todays trash day. My mind is fully aware that this song totally bites, but my sweet tender heart, that the men on this blog blasted to bits yesterday, loves it. LOVES IT I SAY!!!!!

Do you remember when your mom snuck in your room when you were at school and threw away your most treasured teddy bear (or white lamb with denim corduroys as the case may be) just because it was missing it's eyes and half of its lower extremities? What did you do? You went out to the garbage, pulled it out then hide it in the back of the closet where it could give the love and companionship you needed in private. Well, that's how I feel about this song.

The one and only Morrissey has a new album out today titled "Years of Refuge". It's been 3 years since we've heard from him and it was worth the wait.
I have heard it and I'm here to tell you- if you like Morrissey, you'll like this.
His voice has grown a bit richer with age and his lyrics are just as great as they always were.

I know by now you think I should have straightened myself out

You don't get a whole lot more Morrissey than that.

One of Those Days - Joshua Radin

Here is an artist I absolutely ADORE. I have so many favs by this fella. Joshua Radin speaks to my soul people! I love his guitar and I love his voice and I LOVE the stuff his songs are made of!

"Radin began his artistic pursuits at an early age with art, acting and music, growing up in Cleveland, Ohio. Radin graduated from Northwestern University in drawing and painting. Radin's first recording was a demo of the song Winter produced by songwriter Cary Brothers. When a close friend, actor/filmmaker Zach Braff, heard the demo of "Winter"[1], he was immediately interested and featured the song on his show Scrubs in the episode "My Screw Up" early 2004. The song received an overwhelmingly positive response and gave Radin substantial exposure with the show's demographic. The songs "Today," "Closer," "Don't Look Away," and "These Photographs" were also used on the show. Braff also played the triangle in Radin's song "Today."

Since then, Radin's songs have been featured on Scrubs, Brothers and Sisters, Grey's Anatomy, American Idol, One Tree Hill, Lead Balloon, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Leverage (TV Series). His song "Brand New Day" was featured at the end of the Feb 2,2009 episode of House (TV Series). His song "Star Mile" was on The Last Kiss movie soundtrack, as well as Paperweight, which he sings in a duet with Schuyler Fisk, as well as "What If You", which was featured on soundtrack of the movie Catch and Release."

We need to give some props here to Friendly Fires because, for reasons unknown, they are getting none. Get out and shake your boo-tay to this one. "I close my eyes on the dance floor, and forget about you." That's what I'm talking right there. A little escape from the mundane day to day we all have to endure. Sometimes it's fun to forget about all the little things you have to deal with and just be you.

It's no secret that my wife's musical tastes and those of my own rarely overlap. She secretly has a "Crush" on David Archleta and I listen to bands whose blistering sonic blasts would set dainty David's ears a bleedin.

I spent my formative years weened in the New Wave and Alternative scene. During college my tastes continued to shift into the Punk arena where I currently set my tastes somewhere between hardcore/emocore/postcore and the pop-punkers currently dominating my scene. My favorite bands somehow manage to cross the divide as I ascribe to Bad Religion's Greg Graffin school of punk -- You can get away with anything, as long as you offer a decent melody. I like it loud, but I need a chorus, a bridge, and at least some modulation in the vocals. . .

So after and evening of the hippin' and the hoppin' I offer a bit of a palette cleanser: Underoath's Desperate Times, Deperate Measures.



Granted, I have no clue what this video is all about. Young boy goes down creepy hole, puts his hands in gunk, finds a punk band screaming, sees a creepy old man and a bird (who apparently spent too much time at changing spent rods at nuke plant), who then receives a jack-in-the-box that he opens only to be back in his bed.

I'm sure there is some tale of existential angst that is supposed to make me ponder on the cruelty and unfairness of the world. Mostly I just think that if I was that boy and I put my hand into bird droppings heading down the hole -- I would just turn around and go home at that point. Long before the creepy man.

But hey, it's all about the music -- and there Underoath delivers in spades.

De is White, But De Still Gotz the Flow

Since we are throwing out the hip-hop (and I don't have the guts to take that abuse that would come from featuring the greatest hip-hop performance of all time -- Amish Paradise), I must give a shout-out to the band that comes as close to hip-hop as I can stomach.

Sure, if you were walking down a dark alley in Brooklyn you would rather have 50 Cent over Mike D covering your back. And undoubtedly, 50 has taken more bullets, tagged more walls, and covered his skin in more ink. . .

But seriously, could Curtis Jackson pull off the mustache from Sabotage? No. You can't front on that.

(A word of warning, some crazy Euro Rapper wannabes put their ad on the front of the vid. . . Sad thing is that it was the highest quality that I could get. And just like that Air Supply farce, I wanted you to be able to see the chest hair. So deal.)

Do you remember the movie 'Real Genius" with Val Kilmer from 1985? Well, I just finished watching it on "Movies that didn't Suck" on G4, and this song played at the end. I forgot how much I loved this song. It's just so great. It makes me think of summer time for some reason. And I could use a little warmth since it's Valentine's Day and not only is it friggin' snowing outside, but I am feeling no love at home. I am missing Chops right now.

I know Cleopatra loves her some Pet Shop Boys, so this is for her. I really like this one. They have teamed up with Xenomania to produce this album, ergo, a funky new sound. I am only a main stream Pet Shop Boys fan, there other stuff gets a little to funky for my taste, but this is good.

In my opinion, one of the greatest under rated bands of all time. Danny Elfman can be a little creepy at times, but can't we all. He says that many of their songs are about the dead, but this one is about wanting to stay alive.

Killer New Feud Brewing

The Killers lead singer Brandon Flowers is reportedly feuding with his drummer, Ronnie Vannucci. Tensions between the band mates have supposedly become so volatile that Brandon has considered attacking Ronnie midway through a show.

This kind of feuding is not new to rock and roll bands. In 1983, the lead singer and drummer of The Police, had a physical fight on tour that resulted in a broken rib for Sting.

When questioned about the alleged feud, Flowers stated: "I felt our unit was strong. But every now and then I do have a Sting fantasy where I want to jump over the drums."

When asked why he has taken a dislike to his band mate, Brandon said: "Why would I want to do that? It's something only I and our drummer can know."

Most of us would agree that if we spend too much time with another person, they can get on our nerves. Perhaps these boys just need to retreat to their own corners until they cool off.
