Manly Music Monday

I almost didn't post this. It's been stewin for a while but it just doesn't seem right. Every time I pull up OMD on YouTube and it plays back on my little computer speaker it feels wrong and I end up shutting it down. OMD feels too big to fit on a 400x325 screen. Even their name, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, is huge, grandiose, important, deep. I don't even like watching their videos. I always pictured the music they made just coming off of their bodies like human synthesizers and it disappoints me to this day to realize it originates in silly little instruments. These guys were HUGE to me. I probably liked The Smithe, Depeche Mode and The Cure better. But OMD was important to me. Whenever I wanted to feel dark and dramatic as a kid I would pull out Architecture and Morality, turn out the lights and light a few candles. If there was a girl I really wanted to impress I would just copy a few lyrics off of "Secret" and sign my name. When I wanted to feel like a grown up I would put on Crush and feel naughty that I had an album that said "get laid" on it. No double entendre or anything, they just came right out and said it. I even bought their albums in vinyl. And then bought a record player. It just seemed more serious that way.

So after you listen to these two, do me a favor. Do whatever you need to do to get one of their songs on a decent stereo, cue up "Enola Gay, Electricity or Joan of Arc", crank it to 11 and pretend it's 1986 again.

1986 is one of my favourite years. and OMD will always = the movie that made that year so tastic - Pretty in Pink. Best film, best script, best soundtrack. And best wardrobe. Seriously, I dressed like Andie for about 12 months because of it. And occasionally like Duckie.

On a side note am off to see Mraz tonight. I generally like my food cooked but he may be cool yet. Time will tell...

I hope you aren't disappointed with Mraz. My friend went and saw him when he was here and wasn't impressed. And she really likes him. But when Obama gets compared to Jesus in Utah it doesn't generally go over well.

Now to Chops...*sigh*. nuff said.

I have to say that I can't watch the videos either. It doesn't seem right having that voice come out of that face.

sorry for delay - preoccupied with a looming event that will take me out of action for a day or so.

mraz was funky as. i was well impressed. he held back on the offensive comments re jesus and just kept it to the music. it was the perfect tonic pour moi this week.

I love me some OMD. I must tell you that when I was 16 my father almost threw my OMD cd out the window whilst traveling down the road. I had no clue what Enola Gay was. He was offended by the song. I saved my cd though. Cuz I would have to hurt ANYONE who messed with my OMD Greatest Hits cd.

I'm just sayin'...

And Captain- I completely concur with your opinion of Pretty in Pink - it's prety much the best EVER.
I can thank James Spader for my addiction to bad boyz.

OMD is the bomb as the kids say now-a-days. Or "fire" Yeh, they are FIRE.

i saw them in Salt Lake about 9 years ago. They freaking killed. I think it was their only US appearance. Utah is always lucky to get random bands like that stopping in.

pfft. Missouri concerts = yawn

Depeche Mode isn't even coming no where near the midwest on their current tour. Bums me out.

Don't know who u are, Chops McGee, but you know your music.
